Weight Management FAQs

Clear, evidence-based information to help you understand weight loss injections, what to expect, and how to stay safe throughout your journey.

Weight Management

Is your weight management service doctor-led?

Yes. All weight management care is overseen by experienced UK-registered GPs. Prescribing decisions are made by doctors following a full medical assessment - not by automated questionnaires or non-clinical staff.

Do you offer weight loss injections only, or full medical care?

We provide ongoing medical care, not just prescriptions. This includes assessment, prescribing, monitoring, dose adjustments, and access to GP advice throughout treatment.

Is this service regulated and safe?

Yes. We follow UK clinical standards and prescribing guidance. All care is delivered by UK-registered doctors with appropriate clinical governance in place.

Eligibility & Assessment

Do I need to choose Mounjaro or Wegovy before starting?

You don’t need to decide upfront. A GP will review your assessment and recommend the most appropriate option - or advise against treatment if is not suitable.

Can my current medication interact with the injection?

It is very common to take other medications alongside these treatments, and our GPs will check your medication list in detail. Most routine medicines usually work perfectly well with the injections. However, because these injections slow down how quickly your stomach empties, they can sometimes change how quickly other tablets are absorbed into your system. This is especially important, for example, with HRT or Levothyroxine,

We take extra care if you are on medications with a "narrow therapeutic window"—these are medicines like Lithium, Warfarin, or certain epilepsy treatments where the dose needs to be very precise. While you can often still start treatment, we may suggest more frequent monitoring with your GP to ensure your levels stay exactly where they should be.

Can my current conditions affect the injection?

Most health conditions do not prevent you from using these treatments, and for many, losing weight can actually help improve things like high blood pressure or joint pain. However, there are a few instances where we need to be more cautious.

If you have a history of problems with your pancreas or severe digestive issues, we will need to discuss with you the benefits vs the risks. There are also a few very rare medical conditions (such as certain specific thyroid cancers) where these injections are not recommended. Our doctors look at every person individually; even if you have a complex medical history, it is always worth a conversation to see if we can find a safe path forward for you.

Do I need any blood tests before starting?

We can access your NHS records (with your consent) to see previous results, if they are visible on your NHS App. You do not strictly need blood tests to begin treatment, but they can be a wonderful way to map out your health journey. Checking your HbA1c (blood sugar for diabetes) and Lipids (cholesterol) gives us a great baseline to see how your health improves over time.

It can be useful, though not essential, to have a TSH (thyroid) test to make sure there isn't an underlying reason why your body is holding onto weight.

If you are known to have kidney or liver conditions, it is important to have a kidney (U&E) and liver (LFT) function just to ensure your body is in the best possible shape to process the medication.

Injections

What are Mounjaro and Wegovy?

Mounjaro and Wegovy are prescription-only injections used to support weight loss as part of a medically supervised programme. They work by helping regulate appetite and reduce hunger.

Are weight loss injections safe?

When prescribed appropriately and monitored by a doctor, weight loss injections can be safe and effective for suitable patients. Like all medications, they can cause side effects and are not suitable for everyone.

Side Effects and Safety

What side effects can occur?

Many people find no or mild side effects, especially if diet and lifestyle advice is followed. Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation, and reduced appetite. These are often most noticeable at the start of treatment or after dose increases and usually improve over time.

How are side effects managed?

We start at a low dose and increase gradually. If side effects occur, you can message a GP for advice. Treatment may be adjusted or stopped if needed.

When should I seek urgent medical help?

If you feel seriously unwell, develop severe symptoms, or are concerned at any point, seek urgent medical advice. We provide clear guidance on when to contact us versus when to seek urgent care.

Treatment Process

Will I have to stay on this forever?

This is a very common question. These injections are tools to help you reset your habits and biology. Evidence does suggest many patients may need to stay on a low dose of the medication for the long term, and stopping the medication can lead to the weight regain. It is very important to use the injections as a "stepping stone" to get to a healthy weight alongside healthy diet and exercise habits.

How do I take the injections?

The injections are taken once weekly at home. We provide clear instructions and guidance before you start, and you can ask a GP if you’re unsure at any point. We offer a video call to talk you through the first injection, as well as links to video tutorials.

What if I don't like needles?

It’s perfectly normal to feel a bit nervous. The "needle" is actually very small and only injects just under the skin which most people find much more comfortable than deeper injections which go into the muscle. Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how simple and painless it is - it feels more like a tiny prick than a traditional injection.

Do I need to follow a specific diet?

There is no mandatory diet, but healthy eating and lifestyle changes are crucial to sustained and healthy weight loss. Medication works best when combined with sustainable habits.

What happens if the injections don’t work for me?

If treatment isn’t effective or isn’t well tolerated, we’ll review your options. This may include adjusting treatment, switching medication, or stopping injections altogether.

Can I switch between Mounjaro and Wegovy?

In some cases, switching treatments may be appropriate. This depends on your response, side effects, and medical history. Any switch is assessed and overseen by a GP.

Post-treatment

Is weight loss medication a lifelong treatment?

Not necessarily. Some people use medication short-term, while others may benefit from longer use. This is reviewed on an individual basis.

Cost & Access

Is weight management available nationwide?

Yes. Our weight management service is available online across England, with care provided remotely by UK GPs.

Does the service include follow-up and reviews?

Yes. Ongoing medical review and support are a core part of the service.
